Our Sixth Form

Thank you for showing an interest in our Sixth Form. Within these pages we hope to give you a flavour of what we have to offer our students as we live out our mission statement “Christ is at the centre of our school community where we live, love and learn together”.

Life in the Sixth Form

The Sixth Form of St Thomas Aquinas is both large and thriving. We have highly-qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching staff and a proven track record of progression onto higher education and employment. If you decide to join us, you will be given all the encouragement and support you will need to make a success of your chosen course and to help you to develop your plans for the future.

The St Bernadette Centre has recently undergone significant refurbishment and investment. Students have exclusive access to a Panini Bar and Careers Room as well as new computer facilities. The discrete social area and modern learning space mean all the needs of students are met as they become responsible independent learners.

We aim to offer you the very best in terms of both academic and vocational courses and provide a range of courses to match the particular needs of all our students. We are delighted to be part of The Oaks Sixth Form College, aconsortium of schools in South-West Birmingham. This is a collaborative and innovative model and provides an exceptional breadth of choice for our students.

Each year we are very pleased to welcome students from other schools. It has been our experience that these students have settled in quickly. Our staff work closely to ensure that any problems that occur are sorted out as quickly as possible.

All students follow a programme of Religious Education, one hour per week, to gain a certificate at level 2 or 3 validated by the National Open College Network.

House System:

Whilst we believe in allowing greater freedom to our students, we strive to have a true partnership between students, parents and tutors. Excellent pastoral care is provided by experienced personal tutors who advise, encourage and monitor student progress. Our students remain within the House System for Year 12 until they become a distinct year group under the leadership of the Head of Year 13 allowing for an intense focus on study skills, higher education research and future careers.

World Challenge:

In partnership with World Challenge, students at St Thomas Aquinas School are given a potentially life changing opportunity to participate in an adventure of exploration and self-discovery. Every two years students are invited to apply to spend a month of their summer holiday in one of the most extreme climates and spectacular environments in the world. The destination for summer 2014 was Peru and the planned expedition for 2016 is Tanzania! During the two year planning period, students raise their own funds through numerous activities and events and then under guidance effectively take charge of their own expedition. It really is the opportunity of a lifetime!

We view our students as outstanding role models in terms of attitude to learning, behaviour and faith. Throughout their time in the Sixth Form students are given opportunities to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills, both within their peer group and beyond.

Some of the many extra-curricular opportunities available include; a variety of sporting activities, social events, theatre trips, lectures, workshops and residential retreats, Higher Education Week, Voluntary Service Week and the opportunity to support lower school students through paired reading.

The Spiritual Life of the School

At St Thomas Aquinas School students will be part of a faith community. We welcome students and staff who are not Catholic but we expect everyone, without exception, to support our prayer life and participate in our religious events and celebrations. Many of our students take advantage of extended opportunities to develop their faith and spirituality by joining the annual pilgrimages to Lourdes and Taize.

As a Catholic school we are here to help you, the parents, as the primary educators of your children. For a successful partnership, communication is vital.
